How much gold is there in the world?
1 November 2024
Until modern mining, humans had dug about 29 000 tonnes of gold.
Since 1850, starting with the gold rushes in the US and Australia, about 180 000 tonnes were mined.
Most of this was from a handful of countries.
In total, 209 000 tonnes of gold were mined up to 2022. Using some maths, we can calculate that we could make 7.6 million golden bricks.
Assuming that an average 3 bedroom house needs 20 000 bricks, we could build 380 houses.
All the gold in the world could only build a village of 380 houses!
