The weather is going to affect the price of your flat white or cuppacino.
Most coffee (about 75%) is made from arabica beans. The world's biggest producer of arabica beans is Brazil.
Brazil's coffee crops have been damaged by frost, first in 2021 and now in 2024.
This happened before in the 1970s and 1990s. However, temperatures in the last 10 years have been higher than normal.
Rainfall has also been low. The crop in 2024 is expected to be significantly lower than 2023.
With lower supply, the prices of coffee beans have increased at the end of 2024 to $6.10 per kilogram, up over 30% from last year.
