One of the most famous price bubbles was the tulip craze in the 1630s in Holland.
Before tulip mania, a tulip cost a few guilders (the Dutch currency at the time).
When the craze took hold, a futures market for tulips was created, with speculation driving prices.
The peak was 200 guilders; equal to the average annual wage!
